Engraving: Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. "You cannot outrun my arrow." Deborah Harkness
Diana symbolizes the huntress who aims true with her bow and arrow, but she is symbolizes so much more. She is the goddess of the moon as well as a protector of forest animals. Oak groves and deer were especially sacred to her. This image is taken from the sculpture of Diana in the Louvre. The frame is created by bows and there are two crossed arrows at the top to symbolize the huntress. A moon and stars surround her because she rules the moon and the heavens.
"The celestial character of Diana is reflected in her connection with inaccessibility, virginity, light, and her preference for dwelling on high mountains and in sacred woods. Diana, therefore, reflects the heavenly world (diuum means sky or open air) in its sovereignty, supremacy, impassibility, and indifference towards such secular matters as the fates of mortals and states." - Wikipedia
